{DIY} faux fur scarf

Click links to view or purchase items:
Faux fur scarf (as seen in Self Mag) 39.50 || Bracelet 29.99 || Watch orig 250, now 169.99
Similar ring 21.82 || Ribbon - JoAnn Fabric 4.99 + use 40% coupon

I received this {faux} fur collar as a gift last year but never got a chance to wear it while it was still cold out. The ends snap together to be worn as a 'neck warmer', which makes it a little too close to my face (and my lip gloss) - so I decided to do a little DIY this weekend. I've seen fur scarves with a little ribbon to make them longer (like here and here) so a trip to the fabric store and a spool of grosgrain ribbon later, and I had a fancy new scarf. I wore it this weekend with jeans and felt instantly glam. A little over dressed for the grocery store, but still glam.

{DIY} Quick change: Sweater to Scarf

Do you ever find yourself needing a cardigan when you go into heavily air conditioned places, then not knowing what to do with it once you've warmed up?

I usually stuff mine into my giant handbag, but the other day, I decided to try something new: I wrapped it around my neck. The result was a twisty infinity scarf that ended up draping into whatever shape throughout the day. I thought nothing of it, but was complimented so many times and asked where to buy my 'scarf', that I thought I'd share the little trick with you. Lucky readers.

It works best with a very thin fabric. You can use any length of cardigan and there's no 'wrong' way to wear it. I tried twisting it before putting it on, but I ended up with the knot in front and the fabric didn't drape well.

What do you think? Do you like it?

{How to} Wear a Circle Scarf

It's scarf wearing season and time to pull out one of my favorite pieces. In case you missed this post the first time around, here it is again. This marigold color is one of my favorites this season and I'll definitely be making myself another one after giving this one away.

Six Ways to Wear a {Mommy Chic} Circle Scarf

1. Double wrap around the neck
Simply put it around your neck, twist, wrap again, twist up the fabric

2. Leave it long
Easiest way to wear it, just add a little twist

3. Shrug over shoulders
Pull the fabric over your arms for extra coverage

4. One shoulder top
Put it on your torso like a tube top and pull on side up over your shoulder. Slip arm through.

5. Crop bolero sweater
Hold scarf in loop behind back. Slip arms through holes, pull fabric over shoulder and drape.

6. Strapless dress
Put scarf on and leave fabric long. Twist around chest and tie in knot and pin.

{How To} wear a scarf as a top

With the heat barely dropping below 105 degrees the last 40 days in a row, I've wanted to wear as little clothing as possible.  So when it was time to go to brunch with friends, I thought, "Could I just go naked?" (Answer: not again.)  Instead, I pulled out this old scarf and wore it as a top.  It's so thin and lightweight, I'm planning to wear it every weekend until the weather drops well into the double digits.

Blogiversary Giveaway (take 2): t-shirt scarf

Blogger is having technical difficulties right now, so I'm re-posting this giveaway since it seems to show up for some readers and others not.  WTF Blogger???

After being inspired by all the mustard pieces on the fall runways, I decided to DIY a t-shirt scarf to give to one of you lucky readers.  It's not exactly a t-shirt scarf, since it was never originally a tee, but it's made of the same soft jersey fabric that feels so good on your skin.

So today's giveaway is this circle scarf by {mommy chic}.  It's an easy, no-brainer - just throw it around your neck once or twice and you're done.  No need to figure out how to wear it.  I wear mine doubled around my neck, but here are a few different ways to make it a little more fun: (excuse the lack of accessories, I was in pajamas before I threw on the closest white tank and jeans)

Yes, it can also be worn as a one-shoulder top, a bolero sweater, or a wrap dress. So it's really like winning 6 giveaways in one!  I'm sure there are other ways to play with it, but this is what I came up with in 10 minutes.

If this color isn't your favorite, I'll give you the option of a peacock teal or deep purple, but only because I like you.

How to win (mandatory entries):
1. Follow my blog
2. Leave a comment with how much you love it (ok, just something friendly will do) and which color you want
3. Leave your name and email to contact if you win

For extra entries:
Follow me on Twitter
Retweet the giveaway
Post it on your Facebook page
Do this as often as you want, until it's borderline obsessive
(Leave separate comments here for each)
Send me gifts
Send me food or cocktails

Giveaway ends Tuesday, Aug 9. So feel free to tweet an entry every day until then! Winner will be chosen at random (or whoever sends me food or gifts) and announced next week!
Thanks for reading and celebrating my blogiversary!

*Sorry Canadian and European friends, this is only open to US addresses.  Mostly because I don't know the laws about cross-border giveaways and shipping and don't want my scarf to be confiscated as international contraband.

6 ways to tie a scarf

I've posted a few times about wearing scarves (here, here, and here) but never how to tie a long scarf in the basic ways that I wear them all winter long. So when I found this illustration, I had to share it with you.  Because sharing is caring. (See, I did learn something in first grade.  Even if I failed swim classes.)

The outfits may remind you of something your MeeMaw would wear, but the illustrations are well done. (For those of you not from the South, "MeeMaw" is what they call their grandmothers.  And I think the word just sounds like baby powder and floral print.)

My preferences are #1, #2 (outside of jacket) or #4.  What are yours?

What {knot} to wear

This week seems to have a multi-tasking-transformer theme to it. (See here and here.)  It must be a reflection of my current persona - one mere mortal cleverly disguised as 100 different things:  mom, wife, creative, designer, writer, maid, dishwasher, cook, dog walker, daughter, sister...exhausted...

So to conclude the week's unintentional theme, I leave you with this:

Every purchase of a Hermès scarf includes a box of cards to show you all the fashionable ways to wear it.  If a Hermès is not currently in your budget, you can purchase the knotting cards on ebay, though it will still cost you a pretty, albeit colorful, penny.  Or you can save your pennies and just try some of the looks below.  You're welcome.

{DIY} tshirt scarves

Did you remember to wear your green today to celebrate St. Pat's?  No?  Neither did I.  But I did find a cool idea to "go green" instead.

What you need: an old t-shirt or two, scissors, an hour...

And voila!  A new-ish t-shirt scarf!

Instructions:

  1. Find old cotton t-shirts.  Preferably the non-ribbed and stretchy soft variety.
  2. Lay the shirt out fla and cut the hem off the bottom.
  3. Cut the shirt into 1 to 1-1/2 inch horizontal strips from the bottom up to the arms.
  4. Take a few strips at a time and gently stretch them out, either with your hands, or wrap them around something wide overnight.
  5. After you've stretched out all the strips, you can start combining them, braiding, twisting, mixing colors, or whatever your creative, DIY heart desires.
UPDATE: Check out how I wore my own DIY t-shirt scarf here.
Many more options than shown above!
