An ode to the LBD

Oh, little black dress, how do I love thee?  Let me count the ways...
Charolette Russe $34.50

I love you with a string of pearls
NY & Co $24.95

I love you with a little wrap
Banana Republic $98

I love you with my 5-inch heels
Vince Camuto $98
I love you with a little cap
Calvin Klein $128

Every one needs a basic black dress in their wardrobe.  If you opt for a sleeveless sheath dress (like the one above), you can wear it year round a million different ways:  with a scarf or wrap and nude heels (to make your legs look like they go on forever) in the spring; with sandals in the summer; with a black turtleneck and brown suede boots in the fall;  and with a chunky sweater, knit tights and tall riding boots in the winter.  Accessory changes will keep the dress looking fresh every season.  Invest in one great dress, or buy a dozen different styles.  Black will always be the new black.

Hue new

Wearing a solid outfit in a neutral like camel, black or gray is easy and always classic.  It makes you appear taller and slimmer and doesn't take much planning to pull it off.

Wearing a solid outfit in one color, on the other hand, is a little harder to pull off. The trick is to keep within the same shade, but not exactly the same color -- unless of course you are living in a retirement community in Florida wearing your jogging suit before tonight's game of canasta.

This fall, designers are showing bright colors from head-to-toe:

What to wear now & later: the men's shirt

Nothing exciting in your closet?  Time to look into your husband's/boyfriend's/baby daddy's and dig out one of his well-worn button up shirts.  (Try to find the one without the hot sauce stain.)  They're soft, cotton, and classic...and best of all, they smell like his delicious cologne.

Who knew there was a whole new world of outfits to be made out of his stuff!? Here are a couple of suggestions on how to style it:

 Men's chambray shirt, Gap $41.99 (orig $49.50)
Croc wood wedge, Theory $99 (orig $295)

What to wear now & later: scarves

School is in session, football season has begun, the Halloween decorations are on display at Target, fall fashion season has supposedly arrived....so why is it still 90 degrees outside?  And more importantly, what's a stylish mom to wear right now?

Answer: scarves.  Wrap a lightweight scarf around your neck with a plain tank top or v-neck tee back with shorts and gladiator sandals.  So easy.  When the weather finally cools, you can wear that scarf draped around a trench coat or cardigan or pair it back with a long sleeve tee.

The scarves listed below are all under $20 and add instant chic to a basic jeans and tee look.  For those of you who lack skills in the scarf-wrapping department, you can pick up a basic circle scarf (also called infinity scarf) where the work is already done for you - just throw it on like you would a necklace.

White hot

Not wearing white after Labor Day is as old a rule as not mixing black and navy or wearing matching belt-shoes-purse.  Aside from summer weight fabrics, you can wear white all year round.  (Exceptions to that rule are: no white hosiery, white shoes or white bags.  Sure some people can pull it off, but most will look like Nurse Betty.)

Here are a couple of ideas to wear white now:

Look 1: Turn your summer white jersey dress to fall by layering a faux-fur vest over a long cardigan and pairing with over-the-knee boots.

Look 2:  White jeans work all year when worn with a long wrap cardigan and booties.  Add a khaki sequin-front tank to add sparkle and texture.

These boots are made for walkin'

Boots are one of my favorite fashion things about fall.  Wear them with a dress, skirt, leggings, skinny pants or jeans.

You can make your spring dress work into fall with a pair of boots, tights, and a chunky knit sweater.  Or pair them back to a belted cardigan and pencil skirt to toughen up the tailored look. And of course, they are the perfect complement to jean leggings. Whatever your style, invest in a good pair that you'll wear year after year.

Below are a few fall boots in my three favorite colors this season: olive green, nude, and gray.
Click on the links below to purchase or view retailers site:
2. Cole Haan $298
3. Nine West $149
4. Zurich $64.97 (on sale from $198)
6. Target $39.99
7. Frye $428
8. Blowfish $59
